Students at the Institute of City Development at Sevastopol State University and Representatives of Russian Register Together Wrote the ‘Geographical Dictation – 2021’

Students and teachers at the Department of Construction and Land Management at the Institute for City Development, as well as employees of the Department of Geodesy and Cartography at the Office of the Federal Service for State Registration, Cadastre and Cartography (Russian Register), took part in the international educational action led by Gennady Kukolev ‘Geographical Dictation-2021’ at Sevastopol State University.

“I found out about this action and wanted to take part in it in order to test my knowledge. I am very interested in geography, especially in the world. I think that every person should know geography, because it develops a person, raises their erudition. Geographical dictation gives just such an opportunity, "said Marina Grishina, a student studying ‘Land Management and Cadastry’.

The dictation was held on November 14, on the birthday of the honorary member of the Russian Geographical Society, an outstanding naval commander and great patriot of Russia, Admiral Mikhail Petrovich Lazarev, who made an invaluable contribution to the development of Sevastopol and the Black Sea Fleet. More than 3000 people in Sevastopol wrote the dictation in 60 sites across the city.

“I am glad that the idea of conducting a geographic dictation received wide support and brought together a large number of people of various professions, ages and hobbies - those who sincerely love our country”, said Viktoria Lipka, a Lecturer at the Department of Construction and Land Management.

The dictation consisted of 40 questions, divided into two parts. The first part of the basic level included 10 questions – ‘Geographical Educational Programme’ based on well-known facts from this area. In the second part of 30 questions, the visitors of Tauric Chersonesos were required to apply imaginative thinking, logic and erudition.

The ‘Geographic Dictation’ is being held for the seventh time on the initiative of Vladimir Putin, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Russian Geographical Society. The action is aimed at popularizing knowledge about our country, at increasing interest in science and in the national natural and cultural heritage.

Over the past six years, almost 1.8 million people have taken part in the action. In 2017, Dictation became international: it was written in 25 countries of the world. In 2020, the number of participating countries, including Russia, reached 110. Then the action took place on five continents and even in space - on the ISS. Antarctica also joined the event this year.

The geographic dictation continues! There are no restrictions on participation. Everyone has the opportunity to take part in the online version of the Geographic Dictation, testing will be available from 14:00 on November 14 to 14:00 on November 24 (Moscow time). You can go through it at any time an unlimited number of times, the only difference between the online version is that its participants are not provided with the issuance of certificates.
