Space is getting closer: Sevastopol State University Trains Specialists for the Development of the Space Industry
Sevastopol State University is actively introducing technologies for use in space activities. The cooperation between Roscosmos and ScanEx RDC allows the university to master new competencies that are in demand in the space services market and to also train IT specialists for the development of the space industry.
For example, the laboratory for receiving and processing the remote sensing data of the Earth at the Institute of Information Technologies and Systems and Control Engineering at Sevastopol State University is equipped with a station that was made in Russia, ‘Uniscan-M’, for receiving the data and special software. The station is used for operational data reception from four spacecraft (TERRA, AQUA, FENGYUN-3B, JPSS-1).
With the help of the Geomixer web-based geoinformation platform, bachelor and master students in Applied Informatics draw up a schedule for receiving satellite data, control their processing and receive satellite images with reference to geographic coordinates.
Students studying the educational program ‘Geomatics / Geoinformation Technologies’ in their research projects successfully use the skills of thematic interpretation to solve urgent problems of monitoring emergencies, the conduct of which with the help of modern space technologies allows the most effective response to the occurrence of fires, floods, man-made disasters and to also predict their development.
